Bear warning: stay off trails

Updated: Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at 11:18 A.M.

Early this morning, November 2, a bear cub was struck by a vehicle and severely injured on University Dr. East. Campus Public Safety and RCMP responded but sadly, due to the extent of the bear’s injuries, it had to be euthanized.

RCMP have advised that the mother bear and a cub are still in the area and that the mother bear may be aggressive as she mourns the loss of her cub over the next few days. SFU is asking university community members on the Burnaby campus to remain vigilant and avoid walking, hiking or biking on Burnaby Mountain trails for the remainder of the week.

Community members are reminded to review campus wildlife safety guidelines and to report bear sightings to Campus Public Safety at 778.782.4500.

For anyone concerned about walking alone on campus, the Safe Walk program is available 24 hours a day. Call 778.782.7991 and a student patroller or a security officer will walk with you to your vehicle or campus destination.
